Coventry’s very own ‘Wonder Woman’, who claims she cured her terminal cancer with cannabis oil, has vowed to keep fighting to get the drug legalised after receiving thousands of messages from fellow sufferers asking for help.

Since CoventryLive revealed her incredible story back in March , Joy Smith says she has been recognised everywhere she goes.

The 52-year-old, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer in August 2016, was told by doctors that she would only have six weeks to live, unless she started chemotherapy to buy her more time.

But after taking regular doses of THC cannabis oil, which is currently illegal in the UK, she claims her inoperable tumours have almost completely disappeared.

Joy, from Cheyelesmore, said she has received thousands of messages from fellow sufferers desperate to know more about her miracle cure, which she says has left doctors stunned.

‘It should be everyone’s given right’

She has now set up a petition online asking for the drug to be legalised for medical purposes, which she hopes to take to parliament if she gets enough signatures.

“It is upsetting because people think I can cure them but I can’t,” Joy said. “I’m trying to help everybody that asks but it’s difficult because there’s so many.

“I’ve got thousands of messages in my inbox which I haven’t even opened yet – people are desperate, it’s so awful.

“Everywhere I go I get people coming up to me and say you’re that lady who was on telly. It’s heartbreaking to see how many people want help.

“It’s cruel that the government won’t legalise the treatment so they can get it. I want to get as many signatures as possible on my petition so the government listen.

“It should be everyone’s given right to choose whether they take it or not.”

Helping others

Joy said some people have even put up photos on Facebook asking if anyone knows who she is in a bid to track her down.

The oil is not available in the UK but can be sourced online. Joy said the people contacting her are desperate to know how to get hold of it themselves.

Although Joy can’t supply the oil herself, she tries to help in other ways. She is even considering starting a blog and is writing a book about her journey so far.

Joy said: “The book will have advice on what you go through and information on my treatment.

“I hope it will help others going through the same thing and offer them some inspiration, because when you hear the word cancer it is terrifying – but it’s so important to have a positive attitude.

“I laughed through it all and I’ve made the most out of every single day. My life has totally changed since my diagnosis.”

Joy says she feels better than ever after taking cannabis oil regularly

Joy is also keen to spread the word about the high-alkaline diet that she followed, which she believes also helped her tackle the disease.

“Cancer can’t live in a high-alkaline body – that information should be given to every single cancer patient, but hardly anyone knows about it. It should be out there, just like the oil should be.”

To the real Wonder Woman…

Joy’s story featured heavily in the media and created a lot of discussion in online forums.

Speaking about the impact it had, Joy said: “I was very surprised! I didn’t expect it to get that reaction. The day after the story broke I had a reporter at my door at 7.30am wanting to speak to me. It was crazy.

“I then went straight down to London to record for ITV’s This Morning and they put me up in a hotel.

“I couldn’t believe it – the hotel manager knew who I was because he’d read my story online. He knocked on my door with all of his staff and gave me a cake which said ‘to the real Wonder Woman’. It was unbelievable!

“Everywhere I go I get recognised by people. I’ve seen more and more people coming out with their stories since I told mine.”

Cannabis oil – what is it?

Some forms of cannabis oil are now available to buy in shops in the UK.

The cannabinoid CBD is not considered a controlled substance, and is therefore 100% legal. This is what cannabis oils sold in the UK are made from.

THC is the intoxicating and psychoactive substance that is responsible for causing the marijuana high. It is considered a controlled substance, and is therefore illegal.

Cannabis oil can be beneficial for people who suffer from stress, anxiety, depression or lack of sleep. It has also been suggested that it can be used to help alleviate the pain of cancer patients.

However, cancer charity Macmillan.org.uk said: “There are side effects of using cannabis oil. Cannabinoids can increase your heart rate, cause dizziness, hallucinations, paranoia and make you feel ‘stoned’. They may also interact with other drugs.”

It has also been claimed cannabis oil can treat symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and MS.

Better than ever

Joy is still taking the cannabis oil but is optimistic that it will clear up the last of the cancer remaining in her stomach.

She had another scan last Saturday and is now waiting on the results, but said she has a good feeling about them.

“I never in a million years expected this result, it should be impossible for me to be here – but I am,” she said.

“I’m praying that the cancer that was left will have gone. I don’t think it’s going to be bad news because I feel fantastic. I didn’t expect to even be here, but I feel better than ever before.”
